I woke up just before 6:00 AM and and the sun was up. I immediately went up to deck 8 and got a position with my Geoposition app.
This is Bora Bora, it was just to the forward right of the ship.
Tumarra with the sun just peeking over
Bora Bora is a small coral island located in the Leeward Islands group of the Society Islands in French Polynesia.
The island is only 11.3 square miles in size and is located about 140 miles northwest of Tahiti in the South Pacific Ocean. It is an extinct volcanic island with two peaks, the tallest reaching 2,385 feet. The island is surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef. The lagoon is approximately three times larger than the island itself, creating ideal conditions for marine life.
Bora Bora is so small it can be circumnavigated by car in about an hour, but there is still a lot to see. We will be docking in Vaitape.
Bora Bora is another destination which we visited in 2015. Today we have an excursion " Le Truck Island Drive". This sounds similar to an excursion we did last trip, but it was included so we are doing it!
Our internet has been spotty and slow the last few days, that's why this post is a day late. Also as a result the photos might not be in "chronological order" and for that I apologize.
The famous huts of Bora Bora. You may rent one of these for about $1500.00/night
We had to tender into Bora Bora, the orange boat is one of the ships tenders. The tender process went extremely smooth and the trip only took about 5 minutes.
Locals were on hand to entertain us at the pier.
A view of the Sky from the pier. If you will notice the white spot near the upper center of the ship, this is our cabin. No, I didn't leave all the lights on...
Perhaps a dogs life is not so bad on Bora Bora. She is enjoying the sun on the pier. We saw a lot of dogs, and they all appeared the same breed (or interbreed) just different colorations. They also all appeared to be as laid back as this girl.
This is what our travel vehicle looked like, a "Le Truck"
This is our actual Le Truck
These young girls were manning the concession stand at one of our stops.
If you look at the edge where the water turns blue above the rocks in the foreground, you can see a dot. See below
This dog would swim all the way out to his master and rest in his arms for a few minutes then made the round trip from shore to his master time after time.
The housing conditions for the locals was surprisingly poor. The two examples below are actually some of the better of the ones we saw. Some homes didn't even have doors, just blankets across the entrance.
The disparity of $1500 a night and much more to the locals living conditions was terrible.
Beautiful beaches!
This fellow is a coconut crab. We would watch then come out and snag a flower then drag it back into it's hole
Finally, another view of our ship as anchored. You can see a tender by it's side.
We had planned to stay in Bora Bora for a little while after our tour but we were pretty tired after the rough 2 hour ride. Also it was Sunday and the few businesses were closed.
We returned to the ship and headed to the Explorer Lounge to have a cold beer and some nuts. We felt that should tide us over until dinner. Tomorrow we are back in Tahiti and we plan to take the ferry over to Moorea. We don't have anything planned and don't really know what to expect...
