Walvis Bay in Namibia is the city's name and the name of the bay on which it lies. It is the second largest city in Namibia and the largest coastal city in the country. The city covers an area of 11 sq miles. The bay is a safe haven for sea vessels because of its natural deep-water harbor and protected bay. The population of Walvis Bay is about 103,000. The name Walvis Bay is from the Afrikaans work meaning whale so it would be Whale Bay.
We arrived in Walvis Bay around 10:30 AM. We had been in heavy fog since daybreak and it was just beginning to clear as we neared land.
It looks like a ghost ship.
The patterns on the surface of the bay were intricate and beautiful from the currents and the wind.
While on deck 7 watching as we neared the pier, I saw this guy enjoying a little sun on a buoy.
Kay and I did the included tour today. It was just a three-hour tour which took us to Flamingo Bay and then to the desert. I will present a few photos from our trip.
and a neighborhood of government housing. These were much better than most we have seen in Africa, but not all were this nice.
We climbed to the top of one of the smaller dunes and then crossed the road to the beach.
Someone in our group commented to our guide about how clean the streets were. She said they take pride in their cleanliness and if you are caught littering, the penalty is having to do street cleaning duty for six months. That would be a deterrent!
The parking spaces were marked with old buoys. I imagine that works well in an area where you can get several inches of sand overnight.
Walvis Bay is really a nice little town. As I mentioned earlier, it is very clean and neat. It appears to be a fairly prosperous area. I don't believe I could get accustomed to the total lack of grass. There are many green trees which is surprising since the area gets virtually no rain. Our guide explained that they obtain their moisture from the heavy fogs which occurs almost daily along the coast. This is the same fog we have experienced over the past several days.
Tomorrow will be our second day here and we have an early morning excursion on 4x4's. The description sounds similar to what we did today, but with 4x4's it should be much more immersive.
